The hospital bed felt uncomfortable, the room filled with a soft hum from the lights. Kari laid there asleep in one of the beds. His body was bandaged around his torso and arms.
His eyes snapped open suddenly as he gasped for air, still shaken from his in counter with his own abilities. He grumbled as he looked around realizing where he was. He groaned as he tried to sit up in his bed, his body still in pain. He looked around rather confused that there was no one around. He started getting up out of the bed, hoping the nurse wouldn't catch him.
Slowly he started to walk toward the closest window, cracking it open as he got close. He leaned up against the wall, tired from the effort of walking across the room. He reached into his pocket, pulling out a bent cigarette and placing it in his mouth. As he opened the window the rest of the way he pulled out his lighter, sparking it several times. "Dammit..." He tried sparking the lighter a few more times before he heard a door open across the room. His head turned and he stood there like a deer in headlights.

'You need to straighten out your act, Toby! These patients are more fragile than you realize!' The nurse scolded him harshly after he had tripped up and spilled food all over a patient. Toby had said his apologies and he had even been forgiven. But it seemed this lady wasn't ready to let it go just yet. "I said I was sorry!" He defended himself, the nurse glared at him then ran on about how 'sorry' doesn't heal people. Really? He was tired of this shit.
Toby turned around, straightening his white coat and ignoring the nurse as he strutted down the white corridor. 'Wait! I'm not done with you!' He waved a hand dismissively at her and kept going. There was no understanding with the staff here, unlike the various other jobs he had been lucky enough to score. He rubbed his head with one hand as he went to check up on one patient they had recently received. It was an odd case for sure, a man suddenly passing out, pale and in a coma. It was a little scary even. But the case had struck Toby as a special one, like those times when your playing a game and you finally beat a level. That kind of special luck.
He pushed the door open as he came to the room of the guy. At first, he kept his eyes downcast just in case the guy was getting dress. Toby couldn't tell you how many times that had happened. But instead, he found the blue-haired male lighting it up. Toby smiled at his frustrated attempts. "Oh, I wouldn't be wasting lighter fluid on those, I soaked them earlier when you came in." Well, Tobias had been instructed to anyways. But hey, why not take the glory for once? "I see your awake though." He cheered closing the door behind him waiting by the bed.

Kari's gaze turned toward the guy who had walked into his room, cigarette hanging from his lips. He knew he had been caught, but it seemed like the guy didn't seem to care. Although when he heard him say something about soaking his cigarettes he grumbled rather unhappily. He pulled the cigarette from his mouth and flicked it out the window rather annoyed. Slowly he made his way back toward the bed he had been in. Hoping the guy wasn't going to bombard him with questions. "Yeah whatever..."
He sat back down on the edge of his bed facing the newcomer, his piercing blue eyes looking him up and down. "So would you mind telling me what i'm doing here?" Of course he knew he had injured himself somehow, the last thing he seemed to recall was hearing some sort of hissing sound like a gas leak. Although he never remembered being taken to the hospital.
He scratched the side of his head and grumbled softly, unsure of how he was going to explain himself if the guy did ask questions. He decided not to think about it and laid back on the bed, letting out a sigh. Suddenly he felt a sharp pain in the side of his head, the lack of nicotine starting to give him a headache. He sat up quickly and pointed his finger at the guy. "And why did you have to go and ruin my cigarettes?"

Toby gave a cute chuckle, it was fine and dandy that the guy was awake. Even better that he was totally clueless. It helped make his job much easier. The other nurses could interrogate him later if he decided to remain at the hospital. It would be a nice change of pace from the usual annoying tragedy cases or the needy elders. Now, he loved his seniors, but they expected a little too much of him frankly. He frowned a bit, his face stiffening. As much as he needed the money, some of his jobs took a lot out of him. He couldn't help but run a hand through his hair, just as 'Kari', as the clipboard said in the office, had identified him as. "Um. Funny story.." He rubbed the back of his neck, "Someone reported a small explosion out in the town. Apparently some idiot had a pipe with a freaking leak. Someone lit a match and a fir broke out. I was there actually. Well, in the ambulance." He smiled sheepishly. "Took you back here, fixed you up, and here you are." He said in a bit of a tired voice. "It's not the most fancy, but count yourself lucky to get out of a burning building." He said his voice a tad softer. Toby turned his face, his amber eyes lost in thought as he pondered over such events. It was a bit odd to him though. The place had millions of smokers in it and yet only one particular one set it off.
Why did you ruin my cigarettes? His shy smile returned, "Well, it was the doctor's order. I'm only the helper. But don't worry, I won't let you go cold turkey." He laughed and threw a nicotine patch across the bed. "Smoking isn't allowed anywhere in the hospital, except visitors. But thy have a special room." He felt a little sorry he had done it, but eh, it wasn't his problem.

Kari grumbled as he looked around the hospital room, the starch white of everything giving him a cold chill up his spine. He sighed and turned his gaze back toward the guy as he started to speak. His ears perked up when he heard him say something about a gas leak in a building. His memory hazy but he did recall the noise. His mind continued to wander, trying to think of exactly what had happened. "Was anyone else hurt? Or that saw what happened?" His voice was slightly shaky, nervous of the guys answer. He looked back up when he heard the guy say that he had been there and brought him back. Kari's face turned a soft red when he realized that he was the one who had bandaged him up. "Oh.. Thanks.." He quickly turned his gaze away from the guy, in hopes he hadn't seen him blushing.
He let out a soft embarrassed chuckle as he looked around the room, his mind returning to the events that had brought him here. He remembered he had been walking down a hallway, but it made no sense for there to be a leaking gas pipe there. He scratched the side of his head confused, happy that he had at least survived. He snapped out of his thoughts when he noticed the guy had thrown a small patch toward him. He looked down and smiled when he saw the patch. "Your a life saver man."
He leaned back into the hospital bed and smiled softly closing his eyes. He quickly picked up the small rectangular patch and slapped it on his arm, letting out a sigh of relief. Although as he sighed a thin trail of smoke drifted upward from his mouth into the air.

"Was anyone else there?" He paused, resting on his palms as he thought about it. Now that he thought about it, no. It had been just the bartender, and that guy had actually back in the stock room when it happened. Not to mention it was around closing time, so all the other customers were in the cars or already home. "Thankfully...no. No one saw either. The manager was away at the time and was only alerted by the sound." He explained, raising his head to look at him blushing and failing at hiding it. Toby laughed again, this was odd. But, he respectfully didn't press on and continued on with the usual conversation. He watched with interest as he slapped the patch on, thanking him quickly before putting it on. "It's no problem really." He answered, waving a hand dismissively. Even odder though, a small white smoke came up off Kari's arm. "That's a neat trick." He said putting his chin back on his palms. He didn't bother alerting the nurses, they were just fine the way they were.

Kari leaned up and smiled happily when he heard that no one else had been injured by the explosion. "Well that's a relief." He felt his headache subsiding slowly as the nicotine patch seeped into his system. He let out a sigh of relief and started to lean back into the bed when he heard the guy say something peculiar. He quickly sat up and looked at the guy, the smoke still drifting up through the air. Suddenly Kari's eyes started to glow a brighter blue and he raised his hands. "Listen its not what it seems like!"
The room started to fill with a soft hissing noise, the thick smell of pure oxygen started to fill the room. Kari looked around nervously, unsure of what he was doing. But more nervous of how the guy would react.

Tobi put his hands up as if to show innocence. "It's fine, besides, it wouldn't be the first time we've had 'surprises'." He winked at him and smiled sweetly. He understood the careful planning and anticipating. Guys like Kari had to be careful when they were around humans. Toby understood that all too well. He walked over to the fume hood, turning it on to keep the room regulated in it's gaseous substances. "Don't worry too much Kari." Tobias waved it off, like swatting a fly.

Kari smiled softly when he heard the guy at least had some kind of experience with this sort of thing. "How many other people 'like' me have you met?" He looked over at the guy as he opened up a vent and Kari sighed softly. "No its ok.. I think I can stop it." Kari's eyes started to glow a brighter blue again as he focused on the air around him. The hissing gasses around Kari started to swirl, the oxygen forming with hydrogen. All of the sudden small drops of rain seemed to start falling randomly around the room.
He grumbled rather unhappily with himself and a soft blush crossed his face. "Dammit!" He started to focus in a attempt to stop his abilities again but quickly thought better of it, not wanting to cause something worse to happen.

Toby shrugged and starting to count on his fingers. He'd met a couple actually, an odd man who could spark flames and even a woman who was part of the Were family. Then there was always those odd accounts of mutants. Although most of the power people never showed us. "Ten? See, I've only been on the job for a little while. The staff here have seen probably half the population." Toby sat on a chair, leaning back and sort of just watching as Kari attempted to right his oxygen failure. Hydrogen mixed with oxygen and then it started to rain. He chuckled and shrugged his shoulders in an way that said, 'oh well'. Toby let the cool water splatter his skin, dappling his white jacket with drops of rain. This'll take some explaining. Don't worry though, I'll make somehow up. Probably something about malfunctioning sprinklers." Then the nurse would scold him some more and her have to work overtime to fix the damn things. That was ok, Tobias had a passion for mechanics and technology. "So you gonna stay or what?" He finally asked watching him with soft amber eyes.

Kari was surprised to hear that the guy had met so many special individuals. Even though he had abilities he actively avoided using them, let alone finding other people like himself. He sighed softly, slightly embarrassed that he couldn't relate to the guys experiences. The water drops starting to wet his hair, causing it to droop down into his face slightly. He grumbled and looked over at the guy, noticing as he too was starting to get wet. "You really think they will buy that?" Kari cracked a smile and started to chuckle, the rain starting to let up slightly. He brushed some of the wet hair out of his face annoyed with his power malfunction. As he looked up his eyes locked with Toby's, a soft blush crossing Kari's face. He heard as the guy asked if he was going to stay or not and he stuttered slightly. "Y...Yea sure."
He smiled softly and laid back into the bed. "One thing though... You gotta tell me your name."

He laughed sheepishly and gave a shrug, "Sure, maybe not from anyone else. But Im known for being a bit clumsy. They'll believe me." He assured him as he leaned back in the cushioned chair. The soft hum of the lights and pearly white paint made him real irrational, guess anyone would be under these circumstances. Toby raised an eyebrow at him as Kari asked about his name. Guess it was his turn to be embarrassed. "Heh, um, Toby." He chirped with a two fingered salute. "At your service." He added with a wink and then stood up. He was starting to forget why he came here in the first place. "So do you need anything? We got food if your hungry." He suggested, the food here was surprisingly edible despite what rude characters might say. Everything was pretty fresh and kept hot, couldn't really complain.

Kari sighed softly, slightly concerned with the guy getting in trouble because of his powers. He grumbled softly and shrugged. "I would hate for you to get in trouble because of my abilities. After all your the one who fixed me up when they messed up last time..." It felt good for once, to sort of open up to someone. After all he had never just let anyone see his abilities, usually once they went off he was running in the opposite direction. He smiled softly and looked over at the guy, hearing him say his name was Toby. Kari's heart nearly skipped a beat when the guy winked at him. His eyes glowing a brighter blue. "Well Toby nice to meet you." He held out his hand toward the guy as a gesture to shake.
"Come to think of it I am pretty hungry." He sort of half smiled and looked over at the guy, holding his stomach.

Last time...? So, this hadn't been the first time? Odd, although, he wasn 't all that surprised, Kari seemed quite clumsy with his abilities. But he did not mean that in a bad way, Toby had a hard time keeping track of many things and always seemed to mess up in one place or another. He shook the hand happily, it was always a pleasure to meet new people. Most often seemed to get scared by his openly happy personality, or the fact that he was 'different'. And not in a monster versus human way either.
Unclasping his hands he began to stand up, "Think your good enough to walk to the cafeteria? Or you want me to take it up?" He said swiping up his clipboard with a swift wing of the arm. His hand hesitated by the door handle, poised to wait for an answer.
